Abstract

Hymenocallis littoralis (Jacq.) Salisb contains several interesting bioactive constituents and possesses health promoting properties.  In this study, the antioxidant activities of methanol chloroform extracts with twelve (12) different stages of juvenile and flowering plant parts namely young leaf, old leaf, stem, bulb, root, flower stalk and flower were assessed. The antioxidant activities of the different parts were determined by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) assays, respectively. Results showed that the highest % of scavenging effects from DPPH and ABTS assays were from juvenile stage of young leaf (44.2% and 99.84%). Meanwhile, flowering stage of bulb were the lowest % of scavenging effects from both assays (26.84% and 58.31%).  Results from FRAP indicated the juvenile stage of young leaf was the highest (630.0 mgFeSO4/g DW extract) and the juvenile of stem explants was the lowest (493.0 mgFeSO4/g DW extract). Furthermore,  total phenolic content was the highest from juvenile stage of young leaf (1119.0 mg Garlic acid/g DW extract) and the lowest was from flowering stage of stem (8.0 mg Garlic acid/g DW extract). Relatively, the present results suggest that the Hymenocallis littoralis (Jacq.) Salisb from juvenile stage of young leaf have shown potential sources for natural antioxidants.
